Dear Family of Mark Orkin, zl, I admired and respected Mark Orkin as a giant in his field of law and as a gentleman. I am pleased that he lived such a long life and express my condolences to his family. The respect Mark enjoyed among the profession and judges was legendary.

Working with Ed Upenieks, I first came to know Mr. Orkin who represented an opposing party, and I was struck immediately by his calm manner. Over the years, a good many long years, I was always happy to learn we would be working “together” on opposite sides of the table. Then came the years of organizing the butter tart lunches, which almost always involved emails with limericks - very creative and funny limericks! Mr. Orkin was always so kind, warm, and friendly, with a good many story to tell. I will miss his kind soul.

I had the privilege of practicing in the same area as Mark for over 30 years, and since the beginning, was impressed with his prodigious mind, his love of the law, including legal research and writing, and helping define and shape the law of costs. As I grew to spend more time with Mark, I came to know his kindness, his charm, and his sense of justice and fairness. I will always remember Mark''s wit, his fondness for poetry, and limericks, and his love of the Osgoode Hall butter tart.

Mark was a gentleman, in the true definition of the word. A gentle man, an ethical man, a learned man, a principled man, a loving man, a fun-to-be-with man. He has walked into another room carrying our love with him but left the door ajar to still see us and hear us.
