Dear Joan, I was very saddened to see the notice of Stan''s death. As a student of his in his Legal Process course almost 50 years ago, I appreciated the seriousness and conscientiousness of his teaching, the precision of his speech and writing, the clarity of his explanations, and the insight he brought to his beloved Hart-Sacks materials. That course has had a great influence over me and I always associate the ideas I learned in that classmany of which are still vivid in my mindwith Stan. As his faculty colleague I was the beneficiary of many lunch discussions with him where we talkedand often disagreedabout his labour arbitrations, about the role of judges, and about developments in law and legal theory. He was famously uncompromising in his standards, but I found him always open to challenge, fun to argue with, steadfast in his encouragement of my projects, and unfailingly considerate. Over the last decades he would occasionally show up at legal theory workshops, and his presence always gladdened my heart and gave me an opportunity to have at least a short but valued conversation with him. He was an interesting combination of forthrightness, intelligence, and humanity, and I very much valued having been his student and colleague. I am sorry that I shall not see him again. May God comfort you and your family among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Ernie
