Elke, it was with great sadness I learned today of Mel’s passing. He was a real individual, positive, kind and unassuming.I wish that I could write the words you need to hear right now and that they would make everything all right again. Life can seem so unfair at the time of loss. Sending you my sincere condolences for the loss of your husband.

Dear Elke, Simeon and Daniel, Your loss is so fresh, I know that condolences mean little. For all that, I want you to know how sorry I am that your husband and father died on Thursday. I had been in correspondence with him up to a couple of years ago, but long before that he had been in touch with his cousin, my father Oscar Swan, to whom he used to send Canadian stamps for me this would have been about 60 years ago. I pray that you will be spared sorrow for many years to come. yehoshua.sivan@gmail.com

Stunned and saddened at the news of the untimely death of my dear friend Mel. Our club has lost a dedicated Rotarian and the world has lost an extraordinary human being. As he was just two years older than me,I always referred to him as my older brother. He is in our thoughts and prayers and in the gentle arms of His Maker. My wife Rita joins me in sending our very deepest sympathies to his dear wife, Elka, and the rest of the family. May he rest in peace and he will never be forgotten. Sincerely Milo - his younger brother.

Dear Elke and family. We were deeply saddened to learn of Melville''s passing yesterday. He was a very special friend to our family. As you know, Melville and Michael met in traffic court almost 20 years ago and became fast friends. The 3 of you were happily reunited at a chance encounter at Spadina Gardens and I, together with the girls, were brought into the fold. We will always treasure our special times together, including the many wonderful visits at your place. Melville was a great example of a life well lived. We will all miss him very much.

“Auntie” Elka, I am soooo very sorry to hear about “Uncle” Mel. He was one of my dad’s oldest and dearest friends. For a long time, you were regular visitors to our home. As a little girl, I always remember feeling excited when you were coming to visit, because of how kind and funny Uncle Mel was, and how he genuinely seemed to enjoy being with us. He showed a lot of love and patience to us all. When I was 16 and spending 2 weekends at your house as I took a course downtown, I made the mistake of bringing a meat and cheese sub home one night, as I was getting back after dinner. Uncle Mel didn’t fuss, but simply suggested we eat on the front steps. The two of us sitting there, chatting companiably, is a cherished memory. Simeon and Daniel: I also remember how exited he was each time he became a new dad… how proud he was of you over the years. When I saw your dad not that long ago, his face lit up as he talked about you both and about his grandkids. You were one of the first things he mentioned. He loved you all deeply. He was loved by many, including me. He will be missed. My love and condolences to you all. Jane-Michèle

Dear Elke, and Daniel, Simeon and Families We are very saddened by the passing of your dear husband, father, grandfather, our friend. How we enjoyed being in your company! Daniel we feel like we know you too as your Dad spoke so lovingly of the wonderful times with the family in Hamburg . To all the family we send our deepest condolences with the hope that time transform this sadness to sweet and beautiful memory. May he rest in perpetual peace. Josie and Rob

Saturdays at shul were always brighter with Mel. He told great stories and always appreciated others. It was very special to sing and take part in services with him. He brought that same joy to breakout room kiddush online when I was lucky to be placed with him. May his memory be a blessing.

Mel was a joyful and shining light at Cityshul. In fact the last time I attended services we sat with him was we “whispered” our good news to each other and shared a laugh and a smile. He was so incredibly proud of his family and unabashedly grateful for the gifts in his life. Mel will be so very deeply missed. May his memory be for a blessing and may his loved ones and all of those who call City Shul home be comforted.

Mel''s presence, wit, and joy always lit up City Shul''s services. I was always so happy when he was there, sharing his Modim moment of gratefulness. Even through various health problems he always had a way of viewing things with hope and gratefulness. Having both worked in the traffic courts, I also enjoyed talking shop with him. I will miss him dearly.
